Goals and Habits for the Coming Year(s)

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" Jeremiah 29:11 We do a lot of planning, goal-setting, and making resolutions in our lives. We plan out our futures out from the first moment we can think. We dream of being sports athletes, movie stars, and rock stars. Or, we plan and hope to do what our parents do for a living. This continues when we go to school, what kind of college we will go to, what our major will be, if we are going to skip college and enter the workforce. Even after college and we get our jobs - we still continue to plan. What kind of job will we have and how will I move up the corporate ladder. We also set up goals for our personal lives. What will our spouse be like? Where will we live? How many kids will we have? We also set goals and resolutions individually. Losing weight, saving money for a vacation, and home repairs are a few items we plan out. With planning,...

The Ballad of Chris & Susan: (Just Like) Starting Over

It was less than 24 hours after the wedding, that I thought to myself that I had possibly made the biggest mistake of my life. Everything had gone so well, with minor bumps, throughout our courtship and wedding. Now here, on Sunday, I was sitting there with regrets. It had all started that I was fully packed to Boston the next day. Meanwhile, Susan had not packed, it was getting late, and she was resting on the couch. I don't know why it bugged me so, but it did. I figured that she would not be ready on time, and she didn't seem too inclined to get ready on time. It seemed like we were working on different schedules and priorities. The thought crossed my mind was this how it was always going to be? Were we going to rub each other the wrong way always? How were we going to make this work? Did we overlook a lot of things on the race to the altar? These were the thoughts racing through my mind. This was "till death do we part"? We were now living together and I was goi...

The Futility in Being a Cleveland Sports Fan

It's early January and we are coming off another disastrous Browns season. 4-12, another head coach fired, a mess at QB, a front office that has been compared to the Three Stooges (a terrible comparison as the original Three Stooges were comic geniuses and this current regime not so much). The Cavs are having an awful season. Lots of top 4 picks and nothing to show for it. And LeBron James, who tore the heart out of this city when he took his talents to South Beach, has back to back titles. The Indians made the playoffs, but were one and done and don't look like they are making any moves this winter. In fact, they seem to be losing players. "Sigh" - How hard is it being a sports fan in Cleveland? A majority of the time the teams have been awful and at best mediocre. Growing up during the 70's and 80's, The Cleveland Indians season was done by mid-May (though the season officially ends in late September). The Browns have been downright awful since 1999. The Ca...

The year of "WOW!" and Big Dreams

Everybody has dreams. Ones they have chased for years and others that may be brand new. They could be big dreams or small dreams. We dream about our future and where we would like to be. We begin developing dreams from the moment we are little kids. We dream of becoming astronauts, rock stars, movie stars, pro athletes, and superheroes. We didn't know how we would get there, but we knew what we wanted and we trusted we would get there someday. And our dreams don't stop as we get older. We dream about retirement, our families, our homes, our careers, and our futures. We never ever stop dreaming. When we dream, we need to lift them to the Lord. They will get answered one way or the other. He may respond with "Yes" or "No". Sometimes he may tell us to "Wait" or even "I got something even better". In John 15:7 Jesus says "If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish and it will be done for you." Now, this...
