Ikigai

Purpose. Every person searches for it during their lifetime. Purpose can be defined as the aim or goal of a person; what a person is trying to do, become, etc. Everybody desires to have a purpose, a reason for being. People search for it in different places. The Japanese use a term "ikigai", a concept meaning "a reason for being". It usually requires a lengthy search of oneself and the discovery of such brings satisfaction. Examples of this include work, hobbies, fame, and raising children. It is used to indicate the source of value in one's life or to the mental and spiritual circumstances where people feel their lives are valuable. It does not need to be linked to economic status or what society is like currently. In the culture of Okinawa, it is thought of as "a reason to get up in the morning"; that is, a reason to enjoy life. What gets you up in the morning? What do you enjoy about life? It can be defined as what are you passionate about and ...

Talking to Dad 2016

It's hard to believe it has almost been a year already. This time, last year, was when we received that devastating news that the cancer was terminal. Not knowing that we only had a couple of weeks left. We can look back and list the number of regrets. That we didn't talk more, say what we felt, make fun of our sports teams, etc.. But, if I live in the regrets, then we miss all the really good things that did happen. (Except for the football team, you haven't missed anything there). For me, to say everything on my heart would have been an acknowledgement of the mortality of the situation. Pretending that we had lots more time ahead of us. That saying "I love you" would have been the same as saying "goodbye". That I was admitting defeat and had given up hope. At the time, that's what I felt was needed. To show you that I hadn't given up and wanted you to fight to the very end. Which you did. We didn't have to say it to each other. We both k...

Gods of Smoke & Mirrors

When we think of idols, we probably imagine some wooden and/or metallic figure in the shape of a person or animal. We think of the golden calf. Imagining a group of people worshiping a wooden icon - possibly even dancing around it. We also may suppose this would occur in other countries or places untouched by Christianity. Idols come in all shapes and sizes. A majority of the time they aren't even physical objects. We can assume that because we don't own a physical object that resembles a "god", that we are not potentially worshipping any idols. "You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God..." Exodus 20: 3-5a God is pretty clear here regarding idol worship. There is an acknowledgement of other gods, but we are not to place them anywhere above...

Thankfulness A to Z

"Always giving thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ" Ephesians 5:20 Air Conditioning - On hot summer days in Cleveland, I find it a blessing to be able to relax and not sweat to death. I don't do well in the heat. Baseball - The first sport I enjoyed and the first I played. Enjoy attending games to this day. Plan on seeing ballgames in Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Washington D.C. this summer. Perhaps Chicago and/or Cincinnati. Nice leisurely game to follow and enjoy. Comic Books - Don't know what I would do without them. My #1 hobby with close to 20,000 in my collection. Have been enjoying them since I was 5 years old. Dogs - Best animal ever. Very loving and loyal creatures. Always happy to see you no matter how your day went. Encouragement - We all need it during the course of our lives. To help us through the hard times and help us push through when we hit roadblocks. Family - Blessed everyday for my parents and sister -...
