The Day After Easter

"Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said 'They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!' So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus' head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen" John 20:1-7. Easter is a special time of the year. It usually signals the beginning of Spring, which seems appropriate. Spring is when the flowers begin to bloom, and the days become lo...

Daring to be Foolish

"For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God" 1 Corinthians 1:18. One of the things we don't like is to look or be made to look foolish. It can be downright embarrassing. Our pride and reputation take a hit when we are deemed fools. It frightens us. To be considered a fool means to be less of a person, of lower stature. To be mocked or ostracized by a group and left on the sidelines. No one wants to be the fool. When you think about the different stories of God and relating it to others, it seems almost foolish to believe. They are so fantastic and extraordinary that a sane person could scoff at it as pure fiction. Even the ministry of Jesus has its moments where you feel crazy for even believing it. Almost an idea that there was a better way or one more believable. God comes to Earth in human form. Does not establish an earthly kingdom (which was expected in a different way). He dies for...

The OSU Experience: Episode 4

Intervarsity Christian Fellowship was a new and eye-opening experience for me. For one, I had never really given to thinking about my faith as being integral to daily life. Like many, I went to Sunday church sang a few hymns, did a few prayers, took communion, and listened to the weekly sermon. And, that was it. I was a Christian in good standing as I did my weekly duty. There wasn't much more to my faith than that. I believed in God and Jesus as my savior, but as I entered college, that was it. Not a relationship, just more an acknowledgement of "yes, I believe in you and thank you for what you've done". I know I probably touched on this topic a little in part 1 of the OSU experience. Art was the one who first invited me to an Intervarsity meeting one Friday night. His response to me, I believe was "What else are you thinking of doing?" On a college campus, this is where I would spend my Friday evenings. While most of the students were out at the bars on ...

The Biggest Hot Button Issue

There are a lot of topics that I can touch on today that would trigger a massive reaction on both sides of the argument. An issue that would fire up passionate responses from either side. I have seen things discussed that have ended friendships and broken up families. There are issues for all of us that push our buttons and turn us from normal people into raving lunatics without regard for other parties. Abortion. That's a definitely hot topic drawing anger from both sides of the aisle. No, not going there today. Not sure I am fully equipped to discuss that today. Gay Marriage. Another topic that draws passionate responses. Maybe, one day, I will touch on that. Today is not that day. Gun Violence. People are pretty passionate here too. Another one I want to touch on one day. There is definite middle ground here that I think both sides are missing. Politics. Maybe. Definitely pushes buttons easily. I could touch on this, and I will soon. My conservative friends - we can discuss...
