The Gas Pump Analogy

I grew up a member of the Lutheran church. This story is not meant to bash Lutherans or their church. Each church has good and bad aspects to them, primarily because its filled with people. My mother would take us to church each Sunday for years. It helped to form the beginnings of my faith, it started my walk with the Lord. We would go to church each week, listen to the readings, sing a few hymns, go through the liturgy, and listen to the sermon. It was somewhat fulfilling. I was getting fed the word of God, but even as a youngster I always felt there was more. There are a lot of Christians whose only spiritual interaction is for an hour or so each Sunday. They come to church, get fed, and are sent off into the world for the upcoming week. Then, the next week they are "re-filled" and the process starts over. Kind of like a spiritual gas station. Let me say, going to church is a great thing. If you are going to church each week, I recommend that you continue. If it is the o...

Taking the Time to be Inconvenienced

It is somewhat hard to be selfless in this day and age. We are inundated with images and words in our society telling us to look out for ourselves or to do things that benefit us. We are a naturally selfish group - humanity. It is a constant struggle we deal with. Me - I struggle with it. I am very protective of my time and my resources. I place my faith, at times, in what I have and work hard to maintain that security. I know when it comes to helping others out, it usually has to happen on my time and if I can afford it. And when it does, I give myself a pat on the back for being helpful. But is it to my credit to pick and choose when I am helpful? I am not saying you have to help every single time at the expense of your own financial, emotional, and spiritual health. But am I really being helpful if I am not willing at times to step out of my comfort zone. As I said before, I struggle with the issue. I like planning out my time and budgeting my resources. I am not a fan of changin...

Cleaning Out my Anger

Who enjoys driving in rush hour traffic? Who enjoys being cut off and hitting their brakes constantly? Who believes the lane they are driving in is always the slow lane and when you leave that lane, they suddenly figure out how to drive? Who's amazed by the thoughts and language they use while stuck in traffic? I am not a fan of driving to work. My wife can attest to that fact, very rarely wanting to talk to me during those times. It's amazing how angry one can get while in rush hour traffic. I was watching the comedian Louis C.K. talk about this in one of his stand ups. He talked about how awful our language is during traffic and how we scream things that we wouldn't say if that person was near us. If someone leans into your lane you might yell "stupid (insert curse word)". But, you wouldn't say that if they got close to you in a crowded elevator. We sometimes wish horrible things on people when they cant hear us. I know I can be guilty of that. A lot of u...

Random Thoughts & Musings II

1. Christmas can be the most wonderful time of year 2. American History was my favorite subject in high school - I just didn't see many careers in it. 3. It never hurts to ask "Why not?" when you dream. 4. You always find something in the last place you look. 5. Ever notice during rush hour, people will speed and swerve while eating, texting, talking on the phone, or putting on make-up? Yet, a non-moving car on the side of the road will bring them to a sudden stop. Apparently, non-moving cars are the biggest distraction. 6. Is there any accountability anymore? 7. The Rolling Stones best 5 songs: I can't get no satisfaction, Sympathy for the Devil, Paint it Black, Jumpin Jack Flash, and Time is on my Side - but I always change the 5th song depending on my mood. 8. Ever watch a commercial and realize people got paid a lot more money than you make yearly to come up with that/ 9. Didn't you use to have to do something special or important to become famous? 10...
