Random Thoughts & Musings

Back in the day, I used to just write down random thoughts of what I was thinking at the moment. They tend to be my thoughts or opinions or something that caught my attention. Here are a few: 1. Anyone see those Christian Mingle commercials? The one that says God has your perfect match. Every time I see it I want to change the commercial to say" God has your perfect match for you - but if you're tired of waiting try us" 2. Whatever happened to Purplesaurus Rex and Sharkleberry Fin Kool-Aid? 3. George Carlin is the greatest comedian of all time 4. Seriously, who do you put ahead of him? Maybe, Richard Pryor? 5. There's 10 songs that will get me out onto the dance floor. And, no I'm not telling you what they are. 6. I am fairly certain if I dropped dead in my work cubicle - it wouldn't be noticed for days. 7. Who is Sloopy? Why do they need to hang on? 8. No, really - watch George Carlin talk about airline announcements, baseball vs football, the softeni...

An Almost Regrettable Story (Mom don't read this one)

SPOILER ALERT: Mom this is a story I have never shared with anyone but my wife. No need to freak out when you read this. OK, It's funny how our memories can work. Something we completely forgot about, comes to mind with a trigger. Or, even an incident occurred you forgot about it until many years later. That's how it is with a few of my memories. I can distinctly remember a lot of it as if it happened yesterday, rather than many years ago. That's how it is with the following story I will tell. Let me preface this with the fact that only my wife knows any of this story. The funny thing is that when it occurred, I didn't think anything of the situation nor the potential danger I was in. Years later, I would understand what happened and thank God there were elements in place which kept me from making what I think would have been a fatal mistake. This isn't meant to be a cute, brave little story - in fact I consider myself very lucky. This event happened back when I...

Jesus sits on the Throne, Whether I like it or not

"The Lord has established His throne in the heavens, and His kingdom rules over all" Psalm 103:19 Well, that settles it. End of this week's blog post. Join me here next week for me discussing baseball or comic book artwork. It's interesting when something you truly believe is pointed out, and you get thinking about it. It's that "oh yeah that's right" moment. One of our pastors said "Jesus sits on the throne regardless of what we think" (Thanks Dave). And, I went "Oh yeah that's right I believe that. Don't I?" In a lot of ways we don't believe that because we didn't put him on the throne. We can feel that God's sovereignty over creation relies on us putting him there. Regardless of how we might feel in the moment, Jesus is king and Lord of the universe. We decide how we want to react to that news. 2 Chronicles 20:6 states "O Lord, God of our Fathers, are you not God in heaven? You rule over all the kin...

The Cost/Benefit Analysis

When we make choices in our lives we often weigh the costs and benefits when deciding. We look at how we are impacted, not just financially, but with our time and resources. This is countered by what we can get out of it. If we invest our time and money into something we are hoping to get a higher reward on the other side. We don't want to get less than what we put in, it's human nature. I am an accountant in the service industry and have seen this in action. Decisions are made based on how much we get from our investments. Mostly we discuss the cost of our supplies based on what we are charging for them. Its not just higher benefits, but how much higher. Companies are very smart when they make wise decisions looking at their costs and benefits. There is a lot of that in our walk with God. We look at the impact on our lives when we are called. How much will it cost? How much time and effort will I be putting in? What do I get out of it? How do I benefit? When we apply these ...

The OSU Experience: Episode 1

In March 2013, it was twenty years since I graduated from THE Ohio State University (all alumni are contractually obligated to stress the word "the" every time we mention it). It made me reflect of my times while being a student there. The good times and the not so good times. There are people I met there who still have a major impact on my life years later and I have not seen in many years. It was fun, a time to dream, to plan, and to grow into adulthood. It was where I made long-lasting decisions for my life, met new challenges, and made bonds of friendship that still shape my current thoughts. It's also where I grew profoundly in my faith thanks to the friends I met there. The year was 1988 (yes a long long time ago). I had just enrolled at Ohio State and was not prepared for the new experience. Although I was only two hours from home, I found myself homesick. I was away from friends and family and totally out of my comfort zone. Outside of my roommates, the first pe...
