A Simple Kind of Faith

"For we walk by faith, not by sight" 2 Corinthians 5:7 What is faith? Some definitions are a strong belief or trust in someone or something. Allegiance to duty or a person. Firm belief in something for which there is no proof. What do we have faith in? A lot of people would say God. Others have faith according to their belief systems. We can have faith in other people, that they wouldn't harm us. We can have faith that our job (company) is secure or one's vehicle will get them from place to place. There's also the amount of faith we place in ourselves, in what we are able to do. "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see" Hebrews 11:1 What causes us to lose faith? Being let down by someone or something can have that effect. Trying our best and coming up short can cause us to question the faith in our own abilities. Difficulties can also crush one's hope and make them lose faith. When we don't see some...

The Cancer of Unforgiveness

"Then Peter came to Jesus and asked 'Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?'" Matthew 18:21 I like that Peter says "up to seven times?", like he is hoping Jesus will give him a lower number. Peter throws seven at him thinking "that's a good sized number, I'm not asking two, makes me seem like a nice guy". Or, maybe seven is a good number, it's even a lucky number. I'm not sure what Peter was thinking, but I can imagine it went something like that. I like to bargain especially if it's something I don't want to do. It starts when you're little and your parents give you a bedtime and you bargain for additional time. Or, you bargained to get yourself dessert. Or when you're older and you bargain with your wife , which I don't do ;) Maybe you might bargain for something you can get later if you do this for them. In Matthew 18:22 Jesus says "I tell you...

The Words that Bite

"The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one's life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be." James 3: 6-10 Let that description of the human tongue roll around in your head for a while. Not a very pleasant description there. The tongue is described as a fire, full of deadly poison, untamed, and that it can corrupt the whole body. We can do a lot of damage with our tongue and words. There's a reason that I don't sing very loud during worship. Over twenty years ago, after chur...

The Impact of our Earthly Fathers

Every Thursday on my way to work, I listen to local radio station 89.3. That station plays old country and bluegrass music. Outside of hard rock and heavy metal music, I enjoy fast moving bluegrass music. The virtuosity of the banjo, fiddle, and guitar is excellent. The lyrics tell good and amusing stories most of the time. There is also a lot of good gospel music played to a bluegrass rhythm. It's on from 7 am to 9 am every Thursday. When I listen to any kind of music, it can bring back memories or you hear a lyric that makes you ponder. It doesn't have to be worship music to get you thinking about things. Why do I listen to Bluegrass (another style of music my wife wonders why I listen to)? My father enjoys the music so that's my exposure to it. Granted, I didn't like it when I was younger but have grown an appreciation for it as I have gotten older. There's also a bluegrass channel on XM radio, which my father likes. (OK that's two bluegrass station plugs i...

We Interrupt your Regularly Scheduled Blog...

This week I had intended to post a blog entry entitled "An Open Letter to my Conservative Friends". That has been postponed until later as life intervened this past weekend. The best and wisest man I had the privilege to be a son to went home to be with Jesus. The good news is that I was able to be there with him in his final hours and in the final moments was able to pray over him (it was the only thing I could do in that moment). I know in my heart of hearts, I will see him again in paradise. That being said, I am going to take a break from my weekly blog. I will instead repeat a few for the next couple weeks until the first Monday in August. For now, I am going to spend time with friends and family and tell stories about a great man I know. Since you decided to click on this post, I will leave you with a little tidbit. This was submitted by Cheryl on Allrecipes.com. It's very good. Baked Pineapple Casserole Ingredients: 1/2 cup butter 1 cup white sugar 4 eggs...
