The Ballad of Chris & Susan: The Soundtrack

Coming soon from K-Tel records (if you know this, I am impressed and you might be old) comes a collection of love songs and ballads that accompany the wonderful stories of how Chris & Susan met and fell in love. It comes with 22 chart topping songs (mostly from the long ago time of the 1980's and before) that relay beautiful melodies and love songs for a generation. How much would you pay for such a fine collection? Hold onto your wallets and credit cards as I tell you what songs you will receive in this collection. All songs that remind Chris (our protagonist) of the love he has for Susan (our co-protagonist) in a love affair that captivated the world (or at least was mentioned in this blog a time or two)
The soundtrack includes:
1. I Feel Fine - The Beatles: They're the Beatles!!! Greatest band ever!!! Of course, they get a song on this soundtrack
2. Just the Way you Are - Billy Joel: The first song Susan and I danced to as husband and wife. I wanted this to be the song and was playing it when Susan overheard it and said we should use it. So, it was her idea.
3. God Gave Me You - Blake Shelton: Oh no! It's a country song. OK I listen to a little country. The line "That you, an angel lovely could somehow fall for me" resonates with me each time I hear it.
4. I Love You - Climax Blues Band: Always, always, always think of our relationship when I hear this song.
5. Everybody Loves Somebody - Dean Martin: He's Dean Martin, maybe the coolest guy ever. One of his signature songs.
6. Can't Take my Eyes Off You - Frankie Valli: I'm not a fan of musicals. Still don't understand Les Miserables - but my wife loved that I took her to see it. That being said, I love Jersey Boys - and this song is in it.
7. You are the Woman - Firefall: Has the line "I saw your face and that's the last I've seen of my heart" Very true.
8. Some Kind of Wonderful - Grand Funk Railroad: Can I get a witness?
9. You make my Dreams come True - Hall & Oates: Yes she does each and every day.
10. Time in a Bottle - Jim Croce: Could be in my opinion the best love ballad. Haunting melodies and the beautiful sentiment of "That you're the one I want to go through time with"
11. (Just Like) Starting Over - John Lennon: He's John Lennon!!! Captures my sentiment that every time I see my wife, I fall in love all over again.
12. Amazed - Lonestar: It's another country song. "I wanna spend the rest of my life with you by my side Forever and Ever". I can't write anything as good as that.
13. Still the One - Orleans: To be fair, this is my parent's favorite song. But, I like it too. Plus, if you look at the cover of this album, these were dudes very comfortable with themselves.
14. I Saw her Standing There (Live) - Paul McCartney: A good rocking song by Sir Paul. The way she looked was way beyond compare? Well my heart went boom? Now I'll never dance with another? Who can argue with those sentiments?
15. Let my Love Open the Door - Pete Townshend: We saw the movie Dan in Real Life (rent it if you can) and this song was in it. Resonates for me because I am very private and like to bottle up and keep to myself. Being with Susan has helped me open up and be a better person.
16. You're my Best Friend - Queen: Yes she is.
17. I Got you Babe - Sonny & Cher: Admit it, you sing along with it when you hear it. I always wonder how Sonny managed marrying Cher. In much the same, I'm amazed I was able to marry Susan. I'm the Sonny to her Cher - and we are corny enough to sing it every time its on.
18. More Today than Yesterday - Spiral Starecase: I think the title says it all.
19. And She Was - Talking Heads: At first, I wasn't sure why this song is here. But, I always think of Susan when I hear it. I think the line "The world was moving and she was right there with it" captures it. Susan makes my world move and she's always right there with it.
20. Happy Together - The Turtles: DO I have to explain this?
21. You Really Got Me - The Kinks: You can also take the Van Halen version, but I prefer the original. Another rocking love song - says the things even when I can't.
22. Right Down the Line - Gerry Rafferty: It eloquently captures my issue of not always telling Susan how I truly feel. This song captures it.
So, that's the collection of wonderful love songs. You can order it on 8-track, cassette, or vinyl (if you don't have any idea what any of these are - ask your parents or grandparents - they'll appreciate the visit or call). All for the low-low price of $19.99 (it's less than twenty bucks). Order now with credit card info to 1-800-555-LOVE. P.S. - One of these songs bring me to tears when I hear it. Can you guess my favorite? It contains the line "If ever a man had it all, it would have to be me." Enjoy your purchase.

The Criminals on the Crosses of Calvary

"One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: 'Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!' But the other criminal rebuked him 'Don't you fear God' he said, 'since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong' Then he said 'Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.' Jesus answered him, 'Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise" Luke 23: 39-43 The passage from Good Friday brings a tear to my eye especially what Jesus says. To me, this speaks a lot into where my standing is with Jesus at times and I suspect where a lot of Christians are as well. Are we the first criminal that insults Jesus? Or, are we the second one? It can be argued, like most things, we are both at separate times in our lives. Like the first criminal, we can totally miss who Jesus is and overlook who we are. Also, we can be incredibl...

Hiding Behind Superiority

"Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed 'God, I thank you that I am not like other people - robbers, evildoers, adulterers - or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get'. But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner'" Luke 18: 10-13. Most of us have read or heard this story before. We can all assume that we should not act like the arrogant Pharisee. Thanks God immediately for not being like others, who I assume, he feels are inferior to him. He names names and speaks highly of himself. Feeling the need to proclaim his accomplishments to God. Somehow by stating that, makes him a better person. I'm sure he made sure that the tax collector heard his prayer. We can get a good chuckle as we read this. Thinking to ourselves that we don'...

Five Loaves & Two Fish

Every now and then, God will press something important in my life. Some lesson, perhaps some healing. But, there is one place that God keeps bringing me back to during the last few years. I wander, sometimes God wants to show me something else that's important - but once done, he brings me back here. Where he is - is the passage John 6: 8-9. "Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up, 'Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?" I have written about Andrew in the past and how I identify with him. He's a background character for the most part, included in the apostle roll call - but never usually front & center like Peter or Paul. Here in this passage is one of the few times Andrew takes a starring role in the story. We know this story because it is the miracle of Jesus feeding the five thousand. A story I have known backwards and forwards since I was a small child in ...
