"Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts" Colossians 3:16
I have zero musical talent. One time, when I was helping some friends move a piano - someone tapped a few of the keys. Those who had some musical talent started cringing because they said it was horribly out of tune. I, on the other hand, thought it sounded like a piano. I'm also not blessed with a beautiful singing voice and very rarely, if ever, raise my voice loudly while singing in church. Don't want to injure the hearing of those around me I say.
There is the thought that worship is all about singing and playing worship music. But, worship is a state of mind and a way of living. It's not about all the songs you sing or how well you sing them (although it is a part of worship). It cant be all that we do.
Romans 12:1 states, "Therefore I urge you, brothers & sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God - this is your true and proper worship." Sounds like more than just singing.
There's nothing better than coming together and singing worship songs with fellow believers. There is strength in community and a power from a people united in worship. Worship draws you closer and deeper with each other and with God. It doesn't matter if it's an old fashioned hymn, a current standard, or a gospel tune. Singing in worship does the heart good.
However, worship is even stronger and goes further than that. How we live our lives is our worship to God. We worship at work. We worship in our relationships. We worship with our words and actions towards others. Our lives are to be living sacrifices.
What does it mean to sacrifice? To give of ourselves. That can be in a variety of ways. Our time and talents. Taking time spending it in God's word and learning. Helping others in need even if it's inconvenient to us. Giving or volunteering to charities and your church. When we sacrifice, our focus is no longer turned inwardly. Our focus shifts to God and what His desires are. With an outward focus, you can start to see the world as God sees it. You will be drawn to others who are in need, just as Christ was and is.
This is what it means to worship God. To give of ourselves fully for the kingdom. To draw strength and energy from Him. To learn more about God and His plans for us. To draw ever closer to Him is our worship.
Our lives are like music - each day a different note or melody. Some days the music can be hectic, fast, and loud. On other days, there is more melody and a soothing sound. Some moments of the music will have a melancholy feel and other moments will be upbeat and joyful. Our lives are the songs we worship God with. Some songs will be extremely violent and may be out of tune. While others will make up a wonderful symphony, beautiful to the ears. But every song has its ups and downs.
I remember a pastor once saying that God is tone-deaf. Meaning it's not how beautiful our voices are, or our pitch and melody sound, or even if we know the music perfectly - but rather where our hearts are during our worship. If our hearts are on God, then it is a beautiful sound to God.
It is a worship from our hearts. Not of words. Words can be manipulated or used to present a false image. But, God knows us by our heart and where it lies. The heart doesn't lie. It speaks volumes of who and what you worship. Where your heart is, there will lie the object of your worship.
